Trauma-Informed Treatment

At Clean Recovery Centers, trauma-informed care is integrated at every level of treatment. Our programs support accountability, responsibility, and sustainable recovery while recognizing how past experiences influence emotional health, behavior, relationships, and coping strategies.

In Florida, 6,631 individuals died with one or more prescription drugs in their system in 2024. Beyond this statistic are real people whose lives were often shaped by a combination of substance use and unresolved trauma. When treatment focuses solely on substance use without addressing the underlying trauma, long-term recovery can be difficult to maintain.

By treating the whole person, we help clients build a stronger foundation for sustainable recovery.

Trauma-Informed Care at Clean Recovery Centers

Trauma-informed treatment means our team considers how past experiences may affect the way a client feels, responds, communicates, builds trust, and engages in care. Instead of asking only, “What substance are you using?” We also ask, “What has happened, how has it affected you, and what support will help you feel safe enough to heal?”

Trauma and substance use disorders (SUD) are often closely intertwined. For some people, trauma contributes to the development of their SUD. Substances may become a way to manage distress, numb painful memories, or cope with symptoms that feel overwhelming. When addiction is addressed, but not the underlying trauma, it may be difficult to manage and navigate existing triggers and situations that lead to a return to use.

How Trauma-Informed Practices Shape Treatment

Trauma-informed care is incorporated across our detox, residential, and outpatient programs because we know that many clients seeking mental health and SUD treatment have experienced trauma. Rather than treating SUD and mental health conditions separately, our clinical team considers how past experiences may affect a client’s emotional well-being, relationships, coping strategies, and recovery needs. Trauma-informed programs also include individual, group, and family therapy, as well as peer support.

Our team emphasizes safety, trust, collaboration, respect, and client empowerment. Staff members are trained to approach clients with compassion and understanding, recognizing how trauma affects behavior, communication, and engagement in treatment.

Creating a Safe Treatment Environment

We know that healing can only happen when our clients feel secure, supported, and protected. We set clear expectations, professional boundaries, and consistent communication to help create an environment that promotes trust and safety through recovery.

Your confidentiality is our top priority. Individual therapy sessions, clinical consultations, and mental health discussions are conducted in private spaces behind closed doors to ensure privacy. White noise machines are used throughout treatment to further protect conversations and prevent outside distractions, allowing you to speak openly and comfortably about sensitive concerns.

Supporting Different Types of Trauma

Our programs are equipped to address a wide range of trauma experiences, such as childhood trauma, complex trauma, and family and relationship trauma. Trauma affects each person differently, which is why a trauma-assessment process is important at Clean Recovery Centers. When you enter treatment at one of our facilities, our clinical team will learn your trauma history, symptoms, and treatment needs during early care. Based on our evaluation, we develop a personalized treatment plan to ensure you receive the most appropriate level of support.

By recognizing the unique impact of different types of trauma and matching clients with the appropriate therapeutic resources, we help individuals build resilience, develop healthy coping strategies, and make strides toward emotional healing and recovery.

Culturally-Informed Treatment Practices

During the assessment and intake process, we ask more in-depth questions about your cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ethnic background. The information that we gather from these assessments is incorporated directly into your individualized treatment plan.

By understanding each client’s unique circumstances, our team connects individuals with appropriate resources and support services for which they may be eligible.

Through ongoing evaluation, we assess the needs of the community we serve, enabling us to strengthen our programs and ensure our services are tailored to the individuals seeking treatment.

Trauma-Informed and Evidence-Based Therapies

Our programs use evidence-based and trauma-informed therapeutic practices that are scientifically proven to help you process difficult experiences, develop healthy coping skills, minimize triggers, and reduce distress.

One of the primary approaches used in our programs is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is designed to help you identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and emotional responses that are connected to trauma, mental health concerns, and SUD. CBT can give you the tools you need to manage triggers and reduce stress in the real world.

Another key approach at Clean Recovery Centers is rapid resolution therapy (RRT). This method focuses on changing how your subconscious holds traumatic memories, reinterpreting and reprocessing trauma, and pinpointing and calming emotional triggers related to past trauma.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is incorporated into treatment when beneficial. DBT focuses on helping you develop healthy coping skills to replace unhealthy behaviors. DBT is especially beneficial for clients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

How Trauma Treatment Supports Recovery

With trauma-informed treatment, you will understand the connection between your experiences, emotions, and substance use patterns. When you identify trauma-related triggers, you gain a clearer understanding of where your SUD may stem from and recognize the thoughts, feelings, and situations that trigger a return to use.

Trauma-informed treatment also reduces the shame and self-blame that often accompany both trauma and addiction. When you feel safe in a supportive environment, you begin to process difficult experiences, build healthy coping skills, and develop effective strategies to manage stress.

As you start to strengthen your emotional regulation skills, you become better equipped to navigate challenges without relying on substances.

What Makes Trauma-Informed Care Different at Clean Recovery Centers?

At Clean Recovery Centers, we recognize that trauma often plays a significant role in mental health and substance use disorders, which is why we take a comprehensive approach that addresses the whole person rather than focusing solely on symptoms or diagnoses.

What sets our program apart is the integration of specialized trauma services within a broader continuum of care. Clients have access to dedicated trauma-focused treatment, including RRT, delivered by a specialized trauma therapist, as well as evidence-based approaches such as CBT and DBT.
