Benzodiazepines, also commonly referred to as “benzos,” are medications often prescribed to treat anxiety, panic disorder, insomnia, and epilepsy. Many people taking benzodiazepines don’t know about the dangers of these medications. Last year, the misuse of the benzodiazepine lprazolam (also known as Xanax) resulted in the deaths of 986 people in Florida, with 72 being from the Tampa area alone.

If you are living with benzodiazepine addiction and are looking to make the first step into recovery, Clean Recovery Centers’ benzodiazepine detox program is the best place to start.

What We Treat: Benzodiazepine Addiction and Withdrawal

Benzodiazepines can be habit-forming, and even when taken as prescribed, you can become physically dependent. Being dependent on benzodiazepines means that your body is unable to function normally without taking them.

After your body has become dependent on benzodiazepines, suddenly stopping, or quitting “cold turkey”, can cause withdrawal symptoms to occur. Sometimes, these withdrawal symptoms can be overwhelming and difficult to manage, making it feel impossible to continue detox, and often leading to a return to use. The best option for detoxing from benzodiazepines is a medically supervised detox.

How We Treat Benzodiazepine Withdrawal With Detox

At Clean Recovery Centers, we use a three-phase treatment approach that begins as soon as you’re admitted. These phases are preparation, action, and maintenance, and they are designed to support you through each stage of recovery. We offer a medically monitored detox where a clinical care team will assess the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of your withdrawal symptoms and ensure that you receive therapeutic and medical intervention when necessary. Our care team is committed to you and available 24/7 to provide the safety and support you deserve throughout your journey.

Medical detox is only the first step in our preparation phase. Continued treatment at our residential I program follows immediately after detox. Residential I is Clean Recovery Centers’ inpatient treatment program, where the focus is on helping you develop healthy coping mechanisms and finding the root causes of your addiction. You will attend individual, group, and family therapies regularly, which will help you understand and manage the signs of your addiction.

If you have any underlying mental health conditions that may be co-occurring with your addiction, our facilities can diagnose them at any phase in your treatment. We are also the only facility in the area that has rapid-resolution therapists on-site, who can help with any emotional and mental health challenges you may face during your treatment.

Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Symptoms

When you become dependent on benzodiazepines, your brain adjusts how it works around that dependence. However, when you suddenly stop taking benzodiazepines, your brain now has to compensate for the effect it used to have. This is what causes withdrawal symptoms.

The feeling is almost as if you lost something, with your whole system feeling a shift. Because your body has become used to the substance, this time can feel intense and difficult to manage.  This is why a medical detox is necessary.

Common benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms can include:

  • Physical Symptoms
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Headaches
    • Sweating
    • Muscle spasms
    • Body aches and pains
  • Psychological symptoms
    • Anxiety
    • Panic attacks
    • Depression
  • Neurological symptoms
    • Sensitivity to light, touch, and sound
    • Fainting
    • Memory issues
    • Insomnia

It is important to note that some withdrawal symptoms can be severe and even dangerous to handle alone, which is why it is never recommended to detox without medical supervision.

Dangers of At-Home Benzodiazepine Detox

Detoxing from benzodiazepines at home is never recommended. Without medical supervision, withdrawal symptoms can be intense and serious if left untreated.

While rare, more serious side effects of benzodiazepine withdrawal include seizures, dehydration, delirium, and hallucinations. These symptoms can be difficult to handle alone, which is why most with benzodiazepine addiction return to use at this time. It is essential to have medical supervision if these symptoms occur, and our care team at Clean Recovery Centers can provide swift assistance in managing these withdrawal symptoms and offer you support throughout your detox.

Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Timeline

The timeline of benzodiazepine withdrawal varies from person to person. How long you may experience withdrawal symptoms often depends on your weight, gender, and overall health. Withdrawal symptoms can start from six hours to two days after you have stopped taking benzodiazepines and can often last several weeks.

Other common factors include:

  • Type of benzodiazepine taken (short-acting or long-acting)
  • Length of time
  • Current dosage
  • If you are taking more than one benzodiazepine at the same time.

The table below shows a typical timeline of benzodiazepine withdrawal:

Amount of time Short-acting benzos Long-acting benzos Symptoms
6 hours to 2 days since last dose Symptoms can start 6 hours after the last dose Symptoms may start at the 2-day mark
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Nausea
2 to 4 days since last dose Symptoms can peak at this time Symptoms are mild at this time
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety
  • Increased heart rate
4 to 10 days since last dose Symptoms can be moderate at this time Symptoms can peak at this time
  • Headaches
  • Stiff muscles
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sweating

This may feel like an overwhelming timeline, but your recovery is worth it, and we will be with you every step of the way.

Treatment After Benzodiazepine Detox

After the preparation phase is complete, you will transition into our second phase of treatment: action. The action phase is when clients’ paths diverge into the SUD and mental health treatment tracks. During this phase, if you are found to have any underlying mental health concerns, you will continue into a mental health treatment track where all of your underlying mental health conditions will be further addressed to make sure that your mental health is appropriately treated alongside your substance use disorder.

Clients with underlying mental health conditions will continue in our residential II program, where they will participate in:

  • Trauma therapy resolution
  • Identity reconstruction therapy
  • Cognitive self-management techniques
  • Personal growth development strategies

If you are not found to have an underlying mental health condition, you will continue into the SUD treatment track, where the action stage is considered outpatient. If you are placed in the SUD treatment track, you will continue directly into day/night treatment (DNT) after detox. DNT has four main components designed to help clients begin to change their coping habits and integrate a belief system that is fundamental to their recovery.

The four main components of DNT are:

  • Experimental process
  • Defense mechanism identification
  • Belief system exploration
  • Symbolic integration

After this phase of treatment, clients will transition into phase III: maintenance. As in the action phase, the maintenance phase is split between the SUD and mental health treatment tracks. During this phase, you will transition into intensive outpatient (IOP) or regular outpatient (OP) treatment. During this time, all clients will participate in individual, group, and family therapies; they will also work individually with a case manager, who helps develop the life skills necessary to balance priorities and responsibilities within their recovery journey.

FAQs About Benzodiazepine Detox

How long does benzodiazepine detox last?

The initial detoxification process for benzodiazepines is a 24-hour monitoring period, where consistent medical and emotional support will be provided. The detox process is different for everyone and can last from a few days to several weeks. During this time, our care staff will handle everything you need, so the only thing you need to focus on is your recovery.

Are medications administered during detox?

Clean Recovery Centers emphasizes complete abstinence during treatment. However, if it is deemed medically necessary, medication management (MAT) can be administered during detox to ease withdrawal symptoms.

Does Clean Recovery Centers offer more than standard therapies during treatment?

At every Clean Recovery Center, we strive to provide our clients with more than just the traditional therapies offered at other rehab facilities. In addition to our array of traditional therapies, we also integrate wellness practices such as equine therapy and nutritional counseling to promote healthy coping skills during recovery.

How are families involved in the detox process?

Families are often a huge factor in a successful recovery. Family is welcome to engage in family therapy offered during treatment. Family therapy can help build a support system that understands the ins and outs of addiction and creates an aftercare plan that is sustainable for a loved one in the recovery process.
