Comfortable, Evidence-Based Medical Detox in Florida

Clean Recovery Centers in Florida provide our clients with a full continuum of care. Our program includes our proven three-phase approach, which follows clients from initial intake through outpatient treatment. This approach encompasses preparation, action, and maintenance. This process is evidence-based and trauma-informed, and rooted in the 12-step process. The first phase of our program, preparation, encompasses both residential treatment and medical detox. Medical detox is often the first step of recovery, but it is not always necessary for some clients. The need for medical detox depends on the type of substance, the length of time the substance has been taken, and the amount of the substance in the system.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 134.3 million people aged 12 and older consumed alcohol in the last month. Although consuming alcohol doesn’t necessarily mean someone has an addiction, unhealthy drinking habits, such as binge drinking and excess, heavy drinking, can lead to addiction. If someone is engaging in drinking in excess, whether it be at once or continuously over a short period of time, it can be difficult to detox from.

At Clean Recovery, we offer our clients a safe and effective detox method. Medical detoxing works well to provide our clients with medical intervention and supervision, to ensure they have an effective detox resolution to prevent return to use.

What We Treat: Substance-Specific Detox Expectations and Timelines

During admissions at Clean Recovery, our therapists conduct a psychological, physiological, and physical examination of our clients. It is here that we will determine if a medical detox is the right first step on their recovery journey. Some substances do not require a medical detox to begin recovery, but substances such as alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines have a greater hold on the brain and require a detox at the start of treatment.

Some substances take longer than others to leave the system fully. It is important to consider how long the detox process may last and how dangerous it may be to detox alone.

Below are the estimated amounts of time it may take to detox from certain substances:

  • Alcohol can take, on average, 24 to 72 hours to detox from the body
  • Opioid withdrawal symptoms can start just 6 hours after a client’s last dose and last up to 7 days
  • Heroin withdrawal may start around 24 hours after the last intake, but may last from 72 hours to 3 days
  • Benzodiazepine withdrawal usually starts 24 hours after the last intake and lasts a few days to several months, depending on how long and how much the substance was taken

It is important to note that these timelines are estimates, and the withdrawal process can depend on the amount taken and how long these substances have been in our clients’ systems. No matter how long the detox process takes, our staff will ensure that care and comfort are provided throughout the detox.

How We Treat: What to Expect During Medical Detox

There is no one-size-fits-all method for medical detoxing. Methods that work for some clients may not work for others. During the detox process, our experienced medical team will monitor clients’ progress and adjust treatment as needed. Withdrawal symptoms will be cared for immediately, and therapeutic support is available consistently throughout the detox process.

What can be expected in medical detox:

  • Medical Observation
    • Clients will be provided with 24/7 observations from our team of medical professionals to ensure that safety and comfort are present throughout the entire withdrawal process
  • Medication Management
    • Clean emphasizes the need for complete abstinence, but we will use medication-assisted treatment (MAT) if deemed medically necessary
    • Our medical team will administer medications when clinically appropriate to treat severe withdrawal symptoms
  • Trauma-informed therapies
    • Our experienced therapists evaluate a client’s physical, psychological, and physiological well-being and provide consistent, evidence-based, and effective therapies throughout treatment. These therapies include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)

How Medical Detox Works — Safe, Supervised Withdrawal

Medical detox is a detoxification process for clients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and substance use disorder (SUD). The medical detox process includes 24-hour observation from a team of professionals who manage withdrawal symptoms and ensure that clients are comfortable throughout the process. Medical detox is the safest and most effective method of detox, as detoxing alone may be difficult and dangerous if withdrawal symptoms are not cared for accordingly. Medical detoxing can also prevent a return to use, as clients may feel more inclined to continue the use of substances when detoxing alone.

On average, it takes three to five days to detox from alcohol and other substances.

When Is Medical Detox Needed

Some clients with substance use may not require a detox. Certain substances have a greater chance of inflicting withdrawal symptoms. Substances such as alcohol, heroin, prescription opioids, and benzodiazepines have a stronger effect on neurotransmitters in the brain. These substances greatly affect the brain’s “reward system.” This system is responsible for feeling pleasure, usually from activities such as eating, talking with friends, and completing a goal.

Heroin, alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines have a greater hold on the reward system, meaning that clients may only feel pleasure with these substances, and activities that may have previously influenced pleasure may not be effective any longer.

Dangers of Detoxing at Home

Detoxing at home alone is not recommended. Clients may find the process overwhelming when detoxing alone, as some withdrawal symptoms can feel difficult to manage. Some symptoms of withdrawal can also be dangerous. If a client is experiencing these symptoms, it is highly recommended that they be carefully monitored under medical supervision.

These common withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Seizures
  • Dehydration
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • High blood pressure
  • Paranoia
  • Psychosis

These symptoms may also greatly influence a return to use, as these symptoms may feel too intense to continue withdrawal when detoxing alone. Medical detox works to reduce these symptoms and lower the chances of a return to use through constant support, supervision, and medication management.

Clinical Oversight and Licensed Team in Detox

Our team is comprised of master’s-level therapists who guide our clients through daily, individualized therapy and work with them throughout the detox process to ensure they are fully cared for and ready for continued treatment.

Detox Complications and Safety Considerations

Detoxing can be an intense and stressful process. The intensity of symptoms may be influenced not only by the use of specific substances but also by how long and how much of those substances have been taken.

It is important to acknowledge that while symptoms may be complicated, our trauma-informed staff will be with our clients every step of the way.

Medications Used In Detox

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is only used at Clean Recovery Centers when it is deemed medically necessary, as we believe in complete abstinence during and after the rehabilitation process. Several medications can be administered during medical detox to manage symptoms and provide physical and emotional relief.

Common medications can include, but are not limited to:

  • Methadone
  • Suboxone
  • Buprenorphine
  • Phenobarbital

Continuing Treatment After Detox

After you complete the detoxification process at Clean Recovery, it is important to continue treatment to prevent a return to use. You will transition directly into phases II and III of our program, action and maintenance. Phase II, action, starts with a transition to our residential treatment programs. From there, if you have co-occurring mental health concerns, you will continue through our mental health treatment track to address the concerns that may have contributed to your substance use. We are the only treatment center in the area to offer rapid-resolution therapists specializing in trauma therapy, and our therapists provide excellent care tailored to your individual needs.

If you are not exhibiting any underlying mental health concerns, you will follow the substance use treatment track and continue treatment for your SUD. During these programs, you will be offered individual, group, and family therapies as we care for your mind, body, and spirit. During phase III, maintenance, you will step down into outpatient care, where you will build the skills needed for real life, cultivate care networks with loved ones, and develop tools that reduce the risk of relapse.

At Clean Recovery Centers, we believe that aftercare provides you with the foundation for lasting recovery, which is why our aftercare services are available to every client, regardless of when they leave our care. We help prepare you for life after treatment and ensure that you continue to grow long after discharge. Our aftercare team will develop a structured care plan that is tailored to your ongoing needs; you will leave Clean with resources for ongoing therapy, return-to-use prevention, medication management (if needed), and community resources, all of which are essential to sustainable recovery.

Aftercare also includes access to our thriving alumni program. With the Clean Alumni Program, you will experience connection and motivation from a community of like-minded peers who are always there to walk the path of recovery with you. Our alumni program includes invitations to social media groups, opportunities to participate in volunteer activities, and invitations to join outings and events across the Tampa Bay area.
