Electronics Policy

At Clean Recovery Centers, treatment aims to support both recovery from substance use and mental health stabilization within a structured and focused setting. Since addiction and mental health issues can impact attention, mood regulation, sleep, and overall functioning, providing an environment that encourages full participation in treatment is crucial.

Approximately 35% of U.S. adults aged 18 and older with a mental disorder also have a substance use disorder, emphasizing the strong link between mental health and addiction and underscoring the importance of integrated treatment. Our electronics policy is designed to reduce external distractions and support emotional and psychological well-being during care. By limiting constant digital input, clients are better able to focus on therapy, process emotions, and build healthier coping skills that support mental health and recovery.

Electronics Use During Treatment

Our electronics policy at Clean Recovery Centers is designed to support your safety, privacy, and participation in treatment. All electronics will be kept safely by our staff until the scheduled time and returned afterward. At the beginning of every stage of treatment, there is a mandatory blackout period. During the blackout period, you won’t have access to any electronics whatsoever.

While some electronics, such as phones and vapes, are allowed to be used at scheduled times, other electronics, like e-readers and MP3 players, can be used as part of your treatment plan when therapeutically necessary. Laptops and tablets cannot be used except under specific and very limited circumstances in conjunction with your job or school. Clean Recovery can help you with strategies and related regulations such as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) that can be used with employers to get you the time off from work you need to heal.

Gaming systems are not permitted at Clean Recovery Centers because they can hinder your focus and that of your peers on recovery.

Phone Access and Communication Rules

Yes, phones are allowed at Clean Recovery Centers — but not without rules and limitations. During your stay at Clean Recovery Centers, your electronics will be kept safely out of reach for most of the day and used for only one or two hours.

Phone and electronic access are limited throughout different levels of treatment, especially in the early stages. During the detox, residential, and PHP stages of your program, you will have an initial blackout period where you will not have access to any electronics whatsoever. This is to help you settle into your new treatment environment and focus only on your recovery.

The blackout periods are listed below:

Program Blackout Period
Detox 7-day blackout
Residencial 5-day blackout
PHP 3-day blackout

To keep you focused throughout treatment, you will have access to your phone for an hour each day, split into two sessions: once in the morning and once in the evening.

If you feel at any point you need to talk to your family during the blackout period, you can make phone calls under the supervision of your therapist.

Why Electronics May Be Limited

We understand that electronics can sometimes be a distraction. To support you in keeping your focus on your recovery goals, we limit their use during treatment. This way, you can stay fully engaged and make the most of your progress.

Limited contact with outside sources also reduces stress, protects your privacy, and stops the temptation to engage with anything or anyone that could hinder your progress. Additionally, it also limits screen time for clients who may be addicted to their phones.

Staying Connected With Family and Loved Ones

Although you can only use your personal phone during scheduled times, you can still call your family members and loved ones from a landline. During your call, you will be supported by therapists if needed. Video calls may also be an option, depending on your treatment phase.
Otherwise, our staff will update your loved ones on your treatment progress, as long as you have signed a release of information (ROI) form and included them in your care plan.

Laptops, Work, and School Responsibilities

For safety and privacy reasons, the use of laptops is considered on a case-by-case basis and may be used only for work or school purposes. Everyone who uses their laptop must have a plan in place with their HR or school contacts during treatment. In addition, even with permissions to work, laptops are never allowed during detox.

Electronics Policy

Tablets, Kindles, Gaming Systems, and Other Devices

Just like everything else you bring to treatment, the electronics you bring must support your recovery needs. You can bring phones, e-readers, vapes, and MP3 players, but they are not considered necessities.

Electronics such as e-readers and MP3 players are allowed during treatment, as long as you have a medically documented reason showing they are therapeutically necessary. E-cigarettes and vapes are allowed as well, but they may not be used inside the buildings. We have outdoor vending machines where you can buy vapes if you need them.

Other electronics, such as gaming systems, are not allowed during treatment. We believe that gaming systems are too distracting for you and other clients, and the focus should always be on your recovery.

What Electronics to Bring and What to Leave at Home

Even if certain electronics are allowed at Clean Recovery Centers, we encourage you to use your judgment when bringing them along. If you believe they will be too distracting, too valuable, or pose a privacy risk, we ask that you not bring them to treatment.

Examples of electronic devices to bring or not to bring to treatment:

Electronics to Bring Electronics to leave at home Electronics that require approval
  • Phone
  • Vape or e-cigarettes
  • Gaming systems
  • MP3
  • E-readers
  • Computer (case-by-case)

All electronic devices may be used only during scheduled times twice a day. All electronics you bring will be stored by our staff until the scheduled time.
