What We Treat: Adderall and Other Amphetamine Addiction

Amphetamines are often misused for their stimulating effects, whether to stay awake, focus, or perform, but over time, they can lead to physical and psychological dependence. You don’t have to go through that alone.

Our experienced clinical team understands the challenges of stimulant addiction, from withdrawal symptoms like fatigue and depression to the emotional toll of chasing performance.

Backed by a strong, recovery-focused community, we provide the structure, support, and hope you need to get your life back – one step at a time.

How We Treat: Evidence-Based Programming at Clean Recovery Centers

Our treatment programs are rooted in evidence-based therapies and a compassionate, community-focused environment. We offer:

  • Medical Detox: Safely manage withdrawal symptoms under professional supervision to stabilize both body and mind.
  • Residential Treatment: Make connections with others who are managing addiction and grow together through structured, therapeutic settings that provide intensive support.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): Participate in flexible treatment options that allow you to continue daily responsibilities while receiving comprehensive care.
  • Transitional Living: Benefit from sober living environments that offer continued support as you reintegrate into daily life.
  • Dual Diagnosis Care: Address co-occurring mental health disorders, such as anxiety or depression, that may contribute to substance misuse.

4 Reasons Why Our Programs Will Work for You

Wondering whether or not these levels of care will work for you?

Here are 4 things that make our programming unique:

  • We create deeply personalized treatment plans. Our programming focuses on your strengths. We build upon what’s right with each person, not what’s wrong with them. Before we get you started with treatment, we take the time to get to know who you are, where you’re at, and what your needs are. You won’t be pushed into programming that doesn’t fit your current circumstances.
  • Our culturally diverse clinical team has unmatched experience because they’ve been where you are. Our behavioral health professionals and addiction counselors are passionate about providing effective care that connects. Many are in recovery and have been through treatment before.
  • The Clean Recovery Centers Community. Your treatment doesn’t end when you walk out the door. It continues far into your recovery journey with an extensive network of individuals and families who share in your journey. You’ll belong here and be continually encouraged to stay healthy.
  • Comprehensive preparation for life after treatment. The word “clean” isn’t an objective or a destination; it’s a lifestyle change. We teach you how to create a life that supports your recovery beyond treatment and into your future. In other words, you’re set up for success.

What Is Adderall?

Adderall (a stimulant/amphetamine) is usually prescribed for those managing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) because it can improve things like attention span, focus, and impulse control. When used under a physician’s care, it’s a valuable medication that can improve the quality of life for many.

Those who are diagnosed with conditions like ADHD will take adderall and experience relief from the symptoms above, and most of the time, they won’t feel strong “energizing” or “stimulant” effects. They’ll simply feel productive and “normal”.

However, for those who are not diagnosed with ADHD, Adderall can cause energy and productivity surges, increase cognitive performance, and decrease the urge for sleep – all things that are appealing to busy professionals or college students.

Adderall works by increasing the levels of key neurotransmitters in the brain, mainly dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine plays a vital role in motivation and reward, while norepinephrine affects attention and alertness. Adderall stimulates the release of these chemicals and prevents them from being reabsorbed too quickly. This flood of neurotransmitters creates a feeling of heightened focus, confidence, and energy. This is why it’s so frequently misused or obtained.

Over time, repeated Adderall misuse can disrupt the brain’s natural chemical balance. The brain becomes dependent on the medication to produce dopamine, leading to tolerance, where higher doses are needed to achieve the same effects. This cycle can turn into misuse due to physical dependence.

When someone suddenly stops taking Adderall, they may experience withdrawal symptoms like fatigue, depression, brain fog, and irritability. While these symptoms aren’t usually dangerous, they’re signs that the brain is struggling to regulate itself without Adderall.

Who Is at Risk for Addiction to Adderall?

Adderall dependence can affect anyone, but it’s important to understand that dependence and addiction aren’t the same. Even individuals who take Adderall exactly as prescribed may develop a physical dependence, marked by increased tolerance or withdrawal symptoms when stopping use.

In many cases, a primary care provider can manage physical dependence through dosage adjustments or changes to the treatment plan.

Addiction, on the other hand, includes both physical dependence and behavioral or psychological components. People living with Adderall addiction often experience cravings, loss of control, or compulsive use (even when it’s negatively impacting relationships or work). Addiction is more likely in individuals with certain risk factors, such as:

  1. A history of adverse childhood experiences or trauma
  2. A history of substance use
  3. A family history of substance use
  4. Co-occurring psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, or bipolar disorder
  5. Certain genetic markers: Some individuals are neurologically more sensitive to the reinforcing (rewarding) effects of dopamine-boosting drugs. This heightened response can accelerate the path from experimentation to addiction.

If you or someone you love has risk factors for addiction, it doesn’t mean you’ll develop it, especially if your treatment provider monitors your medication. What it means is that taking Adderall outside of its intended use or taking it illegally is especially unsafe for you.
